Google Adds Real-Time Voice Controls to Gmail, Docs, and Keep
New conversational voice features allow users to triage emails, update notes, and draft documents hands-free.
Google is rolling out interactive voice capabilities across its core Workspace apps, introducing Gmail Live, Docs Live, and Keep Live. Powered by Gemini, the feature lets you hold a continuous spoken conversation with your productivity tools rather than typing out individual commands.
In Gmail, you can ask your inbox conversational questions like, 'Did my client send the updated contract yesterday, and what was their main question?' The assistant parses your emails, summarizes the key details, and lets you dictate a draft response on the fly. In Docs and Keep, the tool functions as an active brainstorm partner and real-time transcription assistant.
Conversational Productivity
The update moves workplace AI away from static sidebars and toward ambient assistance. Instead of clicking through search filters or writing structured prompts, you can speak naturally while walking or multitasking.
Google is making the Live features available to Workspace business tiers and Google One AI Premium subscribers, with mobile rollouts beginning immediately.
What This Means for You as a Builder
Voice triage is rapidly becoming the standard interface for knowledge work. As platforms make email and document APIs (the digital bridges that allow software to talk to each other) voice-accessible, builders should focus on designing agents that can reliably summarize, prioritize, and structure incoming communication.
