Nvidia Releases PAIR to Link Home Computers into a Private AI Cluster

A new open-source tool lets you pool computing power across idle laptops and desktops to run local AI agents.

Nvidia has released a free open-source software tool called Personal AI Router (PAIR). Despite the name, PAIR is not a physical hardware device — it is software you install on your network that automatically detects idle computers, pools their processing power, and coordinates them to run local AI models together.

The tool connects with popular local AI engines like Ollama and LM Studio. Instead of relying on expensive cloud subscriptions or overloading a single laptop, PAIR distributes the computational heavy lifting across multiple machines in your office or home.

Unlocking Local Agent Workflows

Running local AI offers complete privacy because your prompts and documents never leave your local network. However, running capable reasoning models locally usually requires significant memory and compute horsepower. PAIR solves this bottleneck by splitting inference tasks — the process of running prompts through a trained AI model — across whatever compatible hardware you have available.

While optimized for Nvidia GPUs, the software works across mixed local environments, enabling machines to act as a lightweight, private mini-cloud.

What This Means for You as a Builder

If you build internal automation for sensitive company data like legal files, finances, or customer records, running models on your own hardware is often non-negotiable. Tools like PAIR make local agent hosting dramatically cheaper and more accessible without requiring dedicated data center hardware.
